In this delectable gothic retelling of the classic, Little Red Riding Hood, one-armed wildling Imelda Echo lives in a cosy, creepy cabin in The Dark, Dark Woods. The Woods are home to beasts large and small. Imelda Echo is not afraid of them, not even the largest, scariest of shadow lurkers. What scares Imelda more than anything is the rest of the world.
One day as Imelda forages for mushrooms and bones and beasties, she spies a boy. Imelda worries the boy might destroy her safe, happy place. Worse than that, she worries the rest of the world will follow. Whilst pondering how best to deal with this looming threat, The Dark, Dark Woods opens its mouth and swallows the boy.
Imelda is relieved. She visits the boy through the seasons, observing as mini beasts take him back to the earth. When all that is left are bones, she decorates her cosy, creepy cabin with them and the rest of the world remains quiet. No one disturbs The dark, Dark Woods again and Imelda's space remains happy and safe.
