It was a period in which the people of Britain demonstrated that resolve of which Churchill spoke so movingly: ?The lights went out and the bombs came down. But every man, woman and child in the country had no thought of quitting the struggle.? Hitler's objective to bomb Britain into surrender would prove a major failure, although it would leave widespread destruction and the loss of countless human lives.
