Virginia 'Ginnie' Joy is twenty-seven and desperate to make some bold changes to her mundane life of disappointed relationships with sexually ineffective men, a safe but boring job and an uneventful social life. Her solution is to place an advertisement in the local newspaper for women who would like to become part of an all-female rugby team.
To her surprise she gets thirty-two replies. During the interviews Ginnie realises that she has tapped into a sexually diverse and sassy wellspring of the local sisterhood who all want something different in their lives, and rolling around in the Wiltshire mud in pursuit of the oval-shaped ball fits the bill. The Furious Fannies team are born.
As the they begin to train, play, and bond it quickly becomes apparent that its not only the men who swear, abuse, fight, bite and smash their opponents in pursuit of victory, the ladies can more than hold their own here as well with the added and hugely humorous wit of Heidi Prager. She is their overly posh lock, enforcer and team character who just loves to wind up their opponents with abusive, humorous comments and dirty play. Since Heidi joined the squad she has, as with some of the others, swopped a rootless existence for one of belonging to a diverse, sassy family of female souls with joy and laughter in each others company as they train and play rugby. The Fannies sexually diverse and competitive bandinage and will to win has collectively become their sporting home.
With their own ground secured and after a couple of local warm-up games under their former alcoholic but experienced female coach, the Furious Fannies play their first season in a competitive but minor South Western league. Each game is an explicit and explosive example of rough female rugby that includes rubbish with occasional flashes of brilliance, see-sawing results, and embryonic sapphic and heterosexual relationships - off and on the pitch - as they bond and fight for their place in the league.
Wiltshire is a county of ancient mysteries and downland miracles and on the pitch some of these begin to show. Off-pitch a burgeoning and unusual relationship develops between Ginnie and a much older but clever, powerful, and rich man as she becomes the standout player in the team.
As The Furious Fannies set out to take on other equally competitive female teams in the pursuit of mud-splattered and explicit-strewn rugby union glory, and Ginnies relationship with the rich man improves, be prepared to support them and become an avid fan.
