          The Ashmolean began when the wealthy antiquary Elias Ashmole (1617-92) gifted his collection to the University of Oxford in 1682. Today, the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology houses Western Art, Eastern Art, Antiquities, Cast Gallery and the Coin Room. The Japanese Kabuki character portraits in this wall calendar are taken from the collections and are all by the ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kunisada.
