The October 2024 revision of the British Army's website carried the headnote 'The Army The Nation Needs: Protecting the United Kingdom and helping it prosper by fighting and winning our battles from the land'. Volume 2 of Modern British Army seeks to examine the current state of Britain's ability to fight and sustain a conventional land war in the immediate future. Since the end of the Cold War the British Army has undergone a seemingly endless series of reviews, each inevitably reducing personnel strength and equipment holdings. The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has brought the question of defence, and the state of the British Army in particular into sharp focus.
