The Book of Confessions is designed to preserve the confessional Reformed status of the Church of Scotland. It has not declared its faith through a supreme human leader, nor through a fixed liturgy, but through statements of faith that declare its understanding of the Word of God contained in Scripture. The Book of Confessions presents a range of individual doctrines with commentary that collectively express the whole faith of the Church of Scotland and brings multiple Reformed texts into conversation with each other, with Scripture, and with the Church, allowing a dynamic engagement with the Bible, the Church's present context and tradition.
It will act as an aid for office holders as they teach and minister today, offering a single point of reference for understanding and sharing the teaching of the Church. It provides rich theological resources from across the Church's history to draw upon for engagement with contemporary issues, and as a foundation for training for all recognised ministries.
