Whilst on the beach at the small Yorkshire coastal village of Tunstall twelve year old twins Wendy and Wayne Rogers are certain that they saw, through the approaching mist, a Second World War German submarine. They could even make out its number, U-115. But the U-115 had been sunk by their granddad’s naval destroyer Magpie way back in 1942 just off Flamborough Head, so how could it now be on the surface in Bridlington Bay? Quite simply it couldn’t, and yet there it was. And over the next couple of years the two children not only met the U-boat’s captain, Heinrich Heckmann, but also journeyed in the U-115 itself. And when they found themselves in life threatening situations whilst out on the sea, Heinrich, his crew and his boat were there to rescue them. When they tried to describe these happenings to their parents and school friends, no one believed them. They were simply using their vivid imaginations having read some of their granddad’s wartime memorabilia. But were they? I invite you to read the three stories and then decide for yourself.
