Since the memorable day when Gerhard was obliged to publicly cane his wife and her mother before a delegation of the town of Schlossburg’s prominent citizens, there has been a new regime of domestic discipline in the Handler household. Both the ladies of the house have become accustomed to Gerhard’s regular use of the cane and to lowering their knickers for punishment.
