After Solomon's reign, the nation of Israel was divided between ten Northern tribes and two Southern tribes. They were identified as "the house of Israel and the house of Judah". During this period the LORD raised up various prophets to speak to these two kingdoms. This was the situation when the LORD called Micah to prophesy. Micah prophesied to the house of Israel at the same time as Isaiah was prophesying to the house of Judah. These two prophets confirm and complement one another. They major on the same themes and they are both preoccupied with the person of Christ. There was no shortage of preachers at that time, exposing the wickedness of the people and the terrible consequences of their rebellion. But their explicit warnings of coming retribution fell, by and large, on deaf ears.
