Michele Moore Veldhoen played slo-pitch with the Rainbows of Okotoks, Alberta for sixteen out of the team’s twenty year history. During those years she raised a family and a few chickens, did the office work for a family business, went to university, became a politician, a model, and eventually, a teacher and writer.
Her memoir, The View From Right Field, is honest, touching, and on base with the importance and humour of her time with the Rainbows. It is a fond recollection of the value of sports and sporting friends after the daily struggle of work, relationships, kids, and the author’s self -diagnosed Psychogenic Hypochondria.
This is a story not just for those who engage in sports. It embraces the value of the precious teammates in our lives; those who accept us and celebrate who we are in spite of warts, weaknesses, bad habits and tempers. Michele Moore Veldhoen’s story will make you yearn for your own Rainbows . You will want to call the team to meet up at the pub for a beer.
Thanks to her outrageous friends from the Rainbows and their national tours across Canada to compete in the SPN Molson Coors Slo-Pitch Championships, the author was able to keep her crazy life in perspective, and hold fast to that special place—right field.
