Earth and its underworld Animarl tumble through time, linked by a portal constantly funnelling Animarl's time-warp Flashings through to John Bowman's beleaguered town of Dyall's Ford.

Animarl itself roils from constant upheaval. The first inhabitants fled east after the ruinous Great War. Now the people huddle in their besieged coastal towns and cities, where outlaws grapple overlords for dominance while beyond the settlements, scattered tribes battle to survive.

Hardship and misfortune abound. Following a distinguished career in Kasina Nabir's Royal Navy, Captain Linden Wilder undergoes grotesque transformation at the hands of sea spirits and is outcast from society, persecuted by humans and animals alike.

Told the curse can only be undone by destroying the Djinn of Margun, Wilder journeys to confront the malignant demon. But the quest goes awry as Linden discovers he is fighting not just for his own life but the very future of humankind.
