In 1959, four scientists travelled to an island at the edge of the world.
They were greeted by giant seabirds, snorting seals and penguins as far as the eye could see.
Their names were Hope Black, Mary Gilham, Susan Ingham and Isobel Bennett, and they were the first female scientists to join an Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition.
Join their journey south and discover their incredible legacy.

In 1959, a young British naturalist is one of four young women who are permitted to join a research expedition to Macquarie Island – the first women scientists to do so. Situated near Antarctica, Macquarie Island is a dream come true for Mary Gillham, who studied birds, and her Australian companions, two of whom were marine biologists, one a seal specialist.
On their return to Melbourne, they were celebrated and, in time, four lakes on Macquarie Island were named after them. This is a terrific book about Mary’s tenacity in achieving her dream, and her passion as a scientist and conservationist at a time when women were not exactly encouraged to have careers.
Jess McGeachin encourages children to get to know the natural world in all its mysterious and breathtaking glory, and South with the Seabirds celebrates these pioneering women with gentle illustrations and sensitive storytelling. Highly recommended for ages 4+.
