Barkly Mansion and the Weirdest Guest (Barkly Mansion, Book 1)

Melissa Keil

There is absolutely NOTHING weird about Cookie, Kyle, Fizzy and Lady Delilah. Except that they live in a mansion - and they’re dogs.

There’s NOTHING weird about their home on Sullivan Street either - until the day a gorilla named Edmund comes to live with them.

Then things do start to get a little weird …

In this sweet, goofy new series for 6+, four loveable friends will learn to get along with the strangest creature they’ve ever met, and discover that sometimes you can get what you want without barking like crazy - whether it’s persuading the evil bunnies next door not to woodchip your favourite stick, or convincing the fancy club at Movie Night to let your weird new housemate sit with them.

Packed full of mischief, mayhem and wordplay, every book features three fish-out-of-water episodes about this loveable canine crew - and their new friend, Edmund.

Review

Barkly Mansion is home to four idiosyncratic, excitable dogs: Lady Delilah (who likes things ‘just so’), Kyle (who’s a bit of a snob and loves all things fancy), and the adventurous Cookie and Fizzie. But this little family of dogs is in for a few surprises when a lateral-minded gorilla named Edmund shows them simpler, more creative ways of solving problems.

I defy any child (or adult!) to resist the wacky adventures of these goofy, adorable animals as they explore the joys and conundrums of collaboration and friendship. The pairing of illustrator Adele K. Thomas and author Melissa Keil is genius; the cartoon-inspired artwork on every page adds to the mayhem and exploits of this madcap animal family, and the mischievous humour and wordplay is guaranteed to keep children reading while laughing out loud. Best of all, it is the first book in a series with more to come! Highly recommended for ages 6+.
