Folks say that an elephant never forgets. That may be so. But maybe an elephant never regrets, either. That's not exactly regrettable. If the elephant doesn't forget and doesn't regret, then maybe he needs not fret or upset either. Hey, we can dream.
That may be a lesson for any of us.
Elephants are a curiosity to be sure. We find them fascinating for the way they look and move and interact with one another. Much of the time, people can be curiosities too --maybe even more than the peculiar pachyderms.
That's the stuff of this poetry anthology, titled An Elephant Never Regrets: Quirks in Verse for Better or Worse. The verses contained within don't exactly poke fun at pachyderms (at least, not much). Mostly, they point to intriguing, inspiring, entertaining, or just plain puzzling characteristics, attitudes, actions, and experiences involving ourselves and others.
Because the best fun is when we can actually laugh at ourselves.
Another aim of these verses is to tell life's stories, be they fragile or funny, disappointing or delightful, melancholy or merry, questioning or just plain quirky. Maybe that's where the learning begins. And maybe it's not really all about elephants.
