The Phoenix of San Rafael is a historical fiction novel set in 1870 in the fictional town of San Rafael, Mexico, exploring an alternate history where, after the U.S. Civil War and the passage of the 13th Amendment, President Andrew Johnson shifts focus from Southern Reconstruction to annexing Mexico. The story, a continuation of Sacred Ground: Sacred Flames, follows the town's struggle for survival amid occupation, rebellion, and political upheaval. At its heart is Josefina Cruz, who rises as a reluctant but formidable leader, determined to protect her people despite internal divisions, dwindling resources, and looming external threats. Through defiance, sacrifice, and resilience, The Phoenix of San Rafael explores the cost of freedom and the power of leadership in the face of overwhelming odds.
