Two Once Removed

Callie Larson expected empty nesting at fifty to start the renewal of her marriage with her traveling, workaholic husband. But when he declares that he has no desire to curb his business travel then chooses his annual, college-friends golf outing over a rare, long holiday weekend with her, she begins to wonder if what is now, which is far from enough, will be all that it will ever be. As Callie ponders a get-away trip to visit her mother just to fill the weekend, her childhood friend shares a rare Facebook post by Callie’s former fiancee as a joke. His post is an open invitation to his Facebook ‘friends’ to visit him at his North Carolina beachfront cottage where he has resettled after his divorce and early retirement. Her friend notices his cottage is just a few hours’ drive from Callie’s mom’s house then suggests that they should go to the beach together to check him out from afar. Callie rejects the idea; but later, when alone at her mother’s house, she reconsiders to go to discretely see, from a safe distance what her lost first love looks like now in person, and maybe, get an idea of the man he is today.

Remastered in 2021, Two Once Removed is the first in a series of three, stand-alone, stories about the struggles of midlife renewal and the overwhelming ripple of personal, family, and faith conflicts that go with it.
