The summer of 2076 is an exciting time for Nikola, a 12-year-old avid gamer. This year, he is competing in the annual Fourth of July Viarbox tournament at the insistence of Dingus, the Viarbox virtual best friend he received for his 10th birthday. Nikola and competitor Nefertiti Naquin enjoy the tournament. But Nikola is hesitant to make it to the finals, where he will face bully Daemon Digeratti. While battling a tyrannosaur during the tournament, Nikola picks up an hourglass embedded in the dirt. Nikola, Dingus, and Nefertiti examine it and discover it is a time travel game called Displace. The game enables them to view events from 1776, where they observe a young Native American warrior in Chicago, a young orphan boy in Philadelphia, and a priest named Father Junipero Serra in San Diego. When Dingus taps the Send calendar, these three people are sent to the year 1976. Before Nikola and his friends can send everyone back to the right time, Daemon finds them and transports them to 1976. With the help of toymaker Albert Bennington, Nikola, Dingus, and Nefertiti embark on a cross-country search for the three individuals they displaced. But with only 10 days to find the trio, and with a curious FBI agent on their trail, Nikola and his pals are in a race to succeed before everyone is permanently trapped in 1976.
