Crisis grips Solanto as Filiddor of Hesk demands from King Carlomen possession of the Tolosian Peninsula. Princess Isatura, en route to confer with Duke Amerro, is abducted by Filiddor's knights. Her newly betrothed, Lord Matteo, and his young brother Olaron, attempt a rescue. First blood is shed, and the long northern peace comes to an end.
Far to the south in the city of Tirilorin, having gained the Eagle Staff, Nikal and Kodi are installed as dual War Wizards by Curdoz and the other Sages. Pausing on their journey at the port of Danzilet, all the men engage in intense training. Asserting her own desire for training, and having become adept at her magic, Lyndz, along with Rainwing, spy on a nearby Khestadone outpost where they find the Alkhaness preparing for battle. Sooner than expected, war comes to them in Danzilet. In battle, the Staff is set against the magic of the Alkhaness. The men, Rainwing, and Musca the dog, prove their skills and heroism. A temporary respite follows, and the group sails for the hidden land of Ulakel.
Joining them are Tiliruf's fun-loving bodyguards, Manwul and Hadon, the astute Healer Shane, and the proud, winged Etoppsi males, Flamefur and Stormgale. Along with Idame and Rainwing, Lyndz draws around her strong women who build on her courage for a dangerous future task. This includes the surprise return of Healers Ulna and Maru, perceiving a fresh Call from the Guardian.
Welcomed by the Qeteral Matriarch Gwyn, the idyllic land of Ulakel affects each of the visitors in profound ways. In council, they learn of the great mission implied from earlier Visions and begin preparing themselves for a dangerous journey. They make new friends, including the part-Human, young Prince Lumin, and their presence encourages him in his Human inclinations and sense of independence. This creates conflict with his brother, the powerful Prince Hurlin, who is jealous of Kodi's influence among the Qeteral and disdainful of Tiliruf as heir to the failed imperial house. While in Ulakel, the men learn the disturbing secret of the long-ago making of the Eagle Staff.
...And finally, Kodi falls in love.
In Brothers of Myghal, third in the epic fantasy series, Heirs to the Taxiarch, signature focus is on the perspective of the male characters. Follow their personal growth, intense friendships, heroic exploits, physical and emotional trials, and love affairs. Yet the growth in the female characters is also acute as they create their own powerful camaraderie in preparation for a future mission to face the evil Alkhaness in Westrealm Khestadon. Their own heroic exploits and trials are to be related in Book 4, Daughters of Vanayema.
