A consensus emerged between participants that workplace stress is primarily due to large workload, deadlines, and work hours, which include weekend and on call hours. These stressors are reduced by supervisors who are available to help with direction, support, and hands-on assistance. Empowering workers were also found to be key to helping to reduce workplace stress. Participants emphasized that supervisors who encouraged their independence, trusted their judgment, valued their input, and who appreciated the work they did helped to motivate employees in spite of the stress. Supervisors displaying a positive attitude toward workers, allowing grievances to be aired, and who were empathetic and supportive in their words and actions were valued. Employees seemed to also perceive a connection between a positive supervisory relationship and enhanced job performance in the employee.
