Izlar served with Company A of the 1st South Carolina Infantry (Hagood's) and later with Company G of the 25th South Carolina. "He enlisted at Orangeburg, South Carolina, was first sent to Charleston, later participated in activities farther down the coast, and in 1864 was sent to Virginia to take part in the fighting around Richmond and Petersburg. Late in 1864 the Edisto Rifles were sent to Fort Fisher below Wilmington; on the fall of that fort the author was captured and sent by sea to Point Lookout Prison, where he remained a prisoner until June,1865." This is one of the most delightful and readable first hand accounts of the war in Virginia that I have read. Mr Izlar's writing style shows that he was highly educated and had a great command of the English language as well as an intimate knowledge of other literature. The original book was published in 1914.
