In 158 B.C., the line of Merari of the tribe of Levi, "the Hasmoneans," broke away from the Aaronic line of Levi of the house of "Zadok." After twenty years of protest, the Zadok line took up residence at Wadi Qumran in the eastern Judean desert, continuing their protest. The two feuded over the right to who should operate the Temple of Jerusalem even up to its destruction in 70 A.D. That other line of Levites, "The Hasmonaeans," ruled the temple in Jerusalem. Most biblical scholars and academics have hidden this rudimentary history. They have defused this history into mere segmented factoids and pigeonholed this controversy into a nothing-to-see, non-event. As a result, most Jewish Yeshiva and Christian Seminary students of either persuasion have little idea of the controversy within the covenant of Moses concerning these two groups.
