Stark realities darkened the political climate across the world in 2017. Adriel, Tejas, and Zaid met in New York several times over the course of that pivotal year. As the dynamics of the city energized them, current and historical perspectives of people dominated their conversations. Their convictions, contradictions and retrospections gave them the strength to deal with the prevailing dark times. We rushed to the shelter at the entrance to Tisch Hall, across from the Starbucks. The calm and therapeutic ambiance of the park had abruptly changed to a rushed chaos of people in damp clothes looking for shelter. The ever-so methodically divergent city had become charmingly disarrayed.

Her consciousness was shattered by the nighttime view of the overhanging volcano. She was afraid. For no reason, the fear of the unknown gripped and ground her and pumped her heart. She had an illusion that she could feel the baby inside her body and felt like protecting it. She did not run, but she walked as briskly as she could, not looking back to see if anyone was following her, not looking up at the volcano, the increasing sound of the waterfall numbing her sensory organs.
