Kohler’s great-great-grandfather, Simeon Bathurst, was a member of this unit from the summer of 1862. Kohler uses the letters Bathurst sent home to help tell the story of the 148th Volunteers, giving the reader a view of the war as seen through the eyes of a member of that unit.
