Citizens and veterans of South Dakota have served with distinction in the U.S. military since the early 1800s. There are many interesting South Dakota War Stories and 126 of them are in this volume.

These stories provide a snapshot of South Dakotans and the role they played in settling the Great Plains, service in the U.S. Armed Forces, stories of the Native American tribes of South Dakota, and the service of South Dakotan men and women in the protection of the United States.

Coverage includes the Indian Wars, Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, the war on terror, and much more, with every branch of the service as well as the South Dakota National Guard from its earliest days covered through the dozens of accounts by and of those who were there.

The author, a resident of Rapid City, is a member of the South Dakota Veterans Writing Group.
