A precocious white cat named Puff accompanied by Kathy and her parents touchdown on a late-night flight to Rome. On the way to the terminal, Puff’s cage accidentally falls off the animal transport vehicle then is picked up afterward and loaded on a plane to Bern Switzerland.

During the unscheduled flight Puff meets a friendly old bloodhound named Harry who frees Puff from his cage after they land. Puff stealthily works his way through the terminal to the back of a pickup truck where he is whisked away into the night.

Puff ends up at a cabin high in the alps owned by an elderly blind woman named Anna who introduces him to the alpine world. During one of Puff’s excursions, he is attacked by a lynx causing him to fall down a cliff onto the back of an ibex named Isak. Isak carries Puff to safety where Puff seeks shelter underground with an arrogant ferret name Fritz.

Fritz explains he is on a mission to save his family held captive in a castle far away and since he saved Puff’s life, Fritz insists Puff help him. Soon the two are climbing behind a towering waterfall, dodging furious marmots, seeking sanctuary in an occupied beaver dam, then scaling a steep cliff to an open field where they meet a helpful stallion named Garland. When they finally reach the castle at midnight, they are forced to climb the dangerous barbican wall to gain entry. Halfway up the wall Puff protects Fritz from a great horned owl who snatches Puff away instead.

With Puff now gone, Fritz seeks help locating his family from the castle sentry: a friendly St. Bernard named Bernie. But the evil groundskeeper, Wilhelm, catches sight of Fritz entering the chapel which sets off a great chase sequence. Fritz observes a secret door leading to the cellar where Medwyn the mouse king and his acrobatic mischief live. Fritz earns the respect of Medwyn who in turn escorts Fritz out of the chapel unseen.

Puff eventually manages to escape the owl’s deadly clutches and keen night vision to discover where Fritz’s family are kept as pets for the young daughter of the baron. Puff and Fritz are finally brought together by a gyrfalcon named Gabriel. His mate, Gwendolyn, was captured by Wilhelm and if Puff and Fritz can arrange her escape, Gabriel in turn will bring Fritz and his family back to their home in the forest.

As Puff and Fritz plan Gwendolyn’s rescue they discover Wilhelm is planning to sell dozens of other animals caged in his secluded section of the castle. Soon Puff, Fritz, and Bernie set in motion a coordinated plan liberating the animals and Gwendolyn who with Gabriel return the ferrets to their home in the forest.

Garland transports Puff to a steep gorge where Puff dodges an armed and angry Wilhelm who is banished from the castle for his evil deeds. Puff meets Isak staring down a step precipice as they glance behind at imminent danger.
