The opening chapter explores the early political aspirations in the Americas and how they factored substantially into the development of the identity of the United States. Chapter 2 addresses the cultural and social developments and interchanges between indigenous Americans, Europeans, and Africans in the Western Atlantic world and the U.S. as the region took on a more diverse identity. Marlin Barber, Ph.D. is a senior instructor of history at Missouri State University, where he teaches courses in American history, slavery in the Atlantic World, Black leaders and movements, African American studies, and historical inquiry. He holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Missouri and M.A. in history from the University of Houston - Clear Lake. He has presented numerous papers at conferences and meetings on the topics of history and African American history.
