Developed for allied health professionals, the anthology Pharmacology for Allied Personnel: Drug Uses, Effects, and Modes of Action offers a collection of readings on the uses, effects, and modes of actions of drugs. Rooted in human biology, the text familiarizes students with the structure of the body and features an organization chart to help contextualize the material and the pharmaceutical remedies. Students learn about the addicted brain, opiates, opioid peptides, and opioid receptors. They study hallucinogens, depressants, and stimulants. The text also details how the body processes drugs through absorption and disposition. Additional material addresses the nervous system, cell form and function, and basic chemistry and organic molecules.

Covering a wide range of useful information in a clear and efficient manner, Pharmacology for Allied Personnel: Drug Uses, Effects, and Modes of Action is well suited to programs in health promotion and for courses geared to direct patient care.

Sheela Vemu is an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Northern Illinois University where she teaches courses in human biology. Subsequently, she was a post-doctoral fellow and research scientist at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and a professor of veterinary pharmacology at Kansas State University.
