The Whispering Dark

Kelly Andrew

Delaney Meyers-Petrov is tired of being seen as fragile just because she’s Deaf. So when she’s accepted into a prestigious program at Godbole University that trains students to slip between parallel worlds, she’s excited for the chance to prove herself. But her semester gets off to a rocky start as she faces professors who won’t accommodate her disability, and a pretentious upperclassman, Colton Price, who seems determined to despise her.

Colton Price died when he was nine years old. Quite impossibly, he woke at the feet of a green-eyed little girl. When she told him to live, he obeyed. Now, twelve years later, Delaney has stumbled back into his orbit, but Colton’s been ordered to keep far away from the new girl… and the voices she hears calling to her from the shadows. Delaney wants to keep her distance from Colton - she seems to be the only person on campus who finds him more arrogant than charming - yet after a Godbole student turns up dead, she and Colton are forced to form a tenuous alliance, plummeting down a rabbit-hole of deeply buried university secrets. But Delaney and Colton discover the cost of opening the doors between worlds when they find themselves up against something old and nameless, an enemy they need to destroy before it tears them - and their forbidden partnership - apart.

‘THE WHISPERING DARK will burrow into your bones and nestle deep, refusing to let go. Kelly Andrew’s prose is aching and lyrical, the mark of a master in the making. This is a story I won’t soon forget’ Hafsah Faizal, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of WE HUNT THE FLAME

‘Ivory tower academia, but make it cosmic horror. THE WHISPERING DARK seethes with forbidden romance and truly terrifying shadows’ Hannah Whitten, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of THE WILDERWOOD duology

‘Eerie and seductive, THE WHISPERING DARK is a masterclass in dark academia. Andrew dazzles with exquisite prose, sizzling romantic tension, and a clever, twisting plot that will keep you breathless until the very end’ Allison Saft, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of A FAR WILDER MAGIC

Review

Delaney Meyers-Petrov has always been treated like she’s made of glass because she’s Deaf – by her parents, her friends and her teachers. When she’s accepted to the prestigious and secretive Godbole University, she knows it’s a chance to start fresh. There, no one knows she’s Deaf, and that’s exactly how she wants it.

Colton Price is Godbole’s golden boy. He died when he was nine years old but impossibly woke several days later, at the feet of a green-eyed girl named Delaney. Now Delaney is attending Godbole but doesn’t seem to remember Colton at all. Which is a good thing, since Colton has been given strict instructions to leave her alone.

As Delaney begins her classes, learning to slip between parallel worlds, she realises not all the professors are willing to accommodate her disability. Forced to turn to Colton for help with her schoolwork, Delaney begins to discover there’s something much more sinister to the University.

The Whispering Dark is an exciting ‘dark academia debut’, full of everything readers would want from the genre: red brick buildings crawling with ivy, murder, and just a touch of the supernatural. The disability representation is spot-on, and author Kelly Andrew’s descriptions of the world are incredibly well-done. I felt everything Andrew wrote keenly and loved the dual perspectives that followed both Delaney and Colton. For me, the only drawback is that this book is a standalone and not a series, because I would love to read more set in this world.

The Whispering Dark is perfect for anyone who loves dark academia, enemies-to-lovers romances, supernatural thrillers and own voices representation. For ages 15+.
