Als Jakob Wassermann im Jahre 1897 "Die Juden von Zirndorf" veroffentlichte, erging sich die Kritik uber dieses Werk des bis dahin noch unbekannten Romanciers in Lobeshymnen, obgleich das Buch zuerst beim Leser nur massig gut ankam. Namentlich Arthur Schnitzler prophezeite dem jungen Prosaisten aus Furth eine glanzende Zukunft und Stefan Zweig pramierte das Fruhwerk des Suddeutschen in einer 1912 verfassten Wurdigung als schlichtweg genial.
