Im Jahre 1806 begann die lange wahrende Freundschaft Bettina Brentanos mit Goethes Mutter Katharina Elisabeth Goethe. Der Dichter hatte auf die ihm schwarmerisch erscheinenden Briefe Bettinas zunachst nicht geantwortet. Doch ein Jahr spater durfte sie in Weimar erstmals den von ihr extrem verehrten Johann Wolfgang Goethe besuchen. Es begann ein Briefwechsel zwischen den beiden, der nach Goethes Tod unter dem Titel Goethes Briefwechsel mit einem Kinde beruhmt wurde.
