The Indiana 13th Cavalry Regiment was the 131st regiment formed and the last Cavalry Regiment formed for service in Indiana. It was mustered in April 29th, 1864. By this time the Atlanta Campaign was in full swing. The 13th Cavalry served primarily in a support mode on the western side of the war for the last year. They encountered Forrest's and Wheeler's Cavalry a number of times and guarded the railroads in Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. In December, 1864, the 13th was engaged dismounted at the Battle of Nashville, then proceeded to Vicksburg and from there to southern Alabama around Mobile. At the close of the war they moved to lower Alabama and participated in the final battles around Mobile. Following the fall of Mobile the 13th participated in Grierson's Raid, then moved to Vicksburg, MS where they were mustered out in November of 1865.
