Par la suite, il a pulverise record apres record et s'est fait des legions d'admirateurs au Canada et dans le monde entier. Mais Tom etait bien plus qu'un athlete inspirant: il s'est engage durant la Premiere Guerre mondiale et a combattu vaillamment. Tom etait aussi un pere de famille et un citoyen devoue. Il n'a pas gagne toutes ses courses, mais il a toujours marche la tete haute.
Durant sa carriere, Tom a toujours pris ses propres decisions… et il a connu le succes par ses propres moyens.
Tom Longboat, the Onondaga runner originally from Six Nations near Brantford, Ontario, who broke records… and did it on his own terms.
On April 19, 1907, a hundred thousand people lined up to watch the eighth running of the Boston Marathon. At the start of the race, more than one hundred runners surged forward, and at the end, Tom Longboat won it in an record-breaking 2 hours,24 minutes and 24 seconds. He became the most famous runner in the world, yet faced scrutiny and criticism of every part of his life, from his revolutionary training techniques to his Indigenous heritage. After the peak of his running career, Tom volunteered for military service in World War I. He survived, and faced further challenges upon his return. But Tom Longboat continued to live his life on his own terms, and his legacy as Canada’s foremost distance runner continues to be recognized to this day.
