Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) was a popular Scottish historical novelist and poet. Scott was the first English language author to have international popularity during his lifetime. Fair Maid of Perth was inspired by the strange story of the Battle of the North Inch. It is set in Perth and other parts of Scotland around 1400. Catharine Glover is the daughter of a glovemaker in Perth, who kisses Henry Gow /Smith the armourer, while he is sleeping, on Valentine’s Day. The Duke of Rothsay wants Catherine and when Gow interrupts an attempted abduction, the armourer is drawn simultaneously into royal intrigue and highland feuds.
