The Towneley Plays is a collection of medieval mystery plays that were originally performed in the town of Wakefield in Yorkshire, England during the 15th century. The plays were discovered in the late 18th century and were eventually published in 1897 by George England. The collection includes 32 plays that cover a range of biblical stories, from the creation of the world to the Last Judgment. The plays were performed by guilds, or groups of craftsmen, and were meant to educate and entertain the largely illiterate population of the time. The Towneley Plays are considered a valuable cultural artifact and provide insight into the religious beliefs and cultural practices of medieval England. The book includes an introduction by George England, as well as notes and glossaries to aid in the understanding of the Middle English language used in the plays. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
