The second period includes the year 1863-the victories of Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and other battles. The third period includes the months from the appointment of Ulysses S. Grant commander-in-chief of the armies of the Union to the final breaking up of the Confederacy and the reestablishment of the authority of the United States.
