This study takes a fesh look at Livy’s accounts of battles, asking how useful they are as depictions of the reality of republican warfare. It looks at the existing models of the infantry battle, combining archaeological and literary approaches, and then attempts to reconstruct Livy’s literary sources, in particular comparing his accounts with those of Polybius and Cicero. Much of the volume is given over to Livy’s use of particular vocabulary - currere, impetus and inferre.
