For more than 200 years, the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., has been the home of Congress, America’s body of lawmakers. Plans for its construction started under President George Washington, who laid the cornerstone in 1793. Over the years, many important figures have played a role in the history of this great national symbol, a home of American democracy.
