We knew then that we had not sufficiently trusted in Him, that we had been of too little faith, that His heart was large enough for all humanity, and that His sympathy for every sorrowing one of earth is as wide and infinite as His love for us who have exchanged earthly griefs for the bliss of the glorified.‘ John, the beloved disciple, told me of the dark days that preceded the last tragedy of Calvary–the bitter hours of Christ’s humiliation and sorrow. He told me how he had sat next Him at table, and leaned upon His bosom at the last love-feast before the betrayal and crucifixion–how he had seen Him, mocked, derided with the purple robe and crown of thorns, and spit upon. And he repeated Jesus’s prayer for those He loved and left behind: Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which Thou hast given me; for Thou lovest me before the foundation of the world.
Shall we see the face of the Father, also? I asked. Only in the face of Jesus, he answered. You recall that when the Saviour was on earth Philip said unto Him: 'Show us the Father.’ Jesus answered, ‘Have I been so long time with you, and yet thou hast not known me, Philip1? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou Show us the Father. When I lived upon earth, it was given me to write 'Not that any man hath seen the Father, save He which is of God, He hath seen the Father.’ God is a spirit. He wears no form. None ‘have heard His voice at any time, nor seen His shape.’
