The Dark Elves decided to avenge Thrym's honor by kidnaping Thor and punishing him, as well as taking back his hammer. The Light Elves overheard the plan and feared that the Dark Elves would wage war against them as well, to own all three worlds at the far ends of Iceland. The Light Elves informed Odin, father of all fathers, of this plan requesting his help to protect their world. Odin and Frigg, fearing for their son's life, planned a battle to free him. Sadly, they needed to depend almost totally on one person to get Thor back with his hammer, Loki.
