Darnet is a young and erudite bard from the city of Afenaril, who has always been fascinated by the culture and mysteries of the Ferathim (the White Wizards of the Continent of Edeleas). During a rainy November evening, after learning of strange and alarming movements that were taking place far to the north in the land of Uzuthur, he makes the acquaintance of the mysterious wizard Merivot in an inn. Having befriended the latter, intrigued by his constant movements, Darnet offers himself one day as his traveling companion. On the way to the mountainous village of Ianual, Merivot and Darnet begin to talk about more and less, and the bard, slowly, is initiated by the wizard into a Great Mystery that, although known to all, few Men have had the privilege of contemplating to the full.
