Storia dell'ordine sacerdotale che per piu di un millennio ha officiato a Roma. Le vergini vestali venivano scelte tra 20 bambine impuberi con eta compresa tra 6 e 10 anni. La vita religiosa aveva una durata di 30 anni: nei primi 10 erano novizie discipvlae, nei secondi 10 erano ministre del culto mentre gli ultimi dieci anni erano dedicati, come insegnanti, all'istruzione delle novizie. Conclusi i 30 anni di sacerdozio, alle Vestali era consentito: lasciare il servizio, restare all'interno dell'atrium Vestae o addirittura sposarsi.
