Motor Machinists Mate First Class (MoMM1c) Hugo (n) Riccardi was a prolific writer, sending hundreds of letters home to his wife until his death on 29 January 1945 at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands aboard USS Serpens (AK-97). He mailed 88 letters home to his wife Silvia just while stationed aboard Serpens. His letters, amongst the others written by other Serpens crewmembers, reflect life in the Coast Guard, aboard Serpens, crewmates, the places they visited, and general life on land and at sea.
