This is the 20th in a series of novels that revolve around JP Parker a 100-year-old retired New York City private detective from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. The novels are his first-person recollections as told to a young writer who is compiling them into book form. They deal with his most notable cases and the famous people who crossed his path. Parker and his wife, Doris, go to Michigan for her Aunt's funeral where Doris is inexplicably approached by a TV executive about a job. While accompanying Doris to her interview, Parker sees a photo in the exec's New York office that reveals his unsavory connections. Deciding to investigate quickly draws the detective and his wife into an combination of odd businesses, smuggling, mafia connections, the FBI, local politics, and murder. Meanwhile, in the present day, Parker's writing partner, Freddy, and his wife, Sandra, are asked by Parker's caregiver, Myong, for help when the local mafia threatens her over an incriminating item they think her late husband was using for blackmail. Soon all five have to creatively fight for their lives on several fronts while also protecting Doris' Uncle from a life-threatening situation of his own.
