Ons Bataafs verleden werd in de zestiende eeuw gewoon verzonnen en vastgelegd in een historisch opstel waarvan de monnik Cornelius Aurelius (1460 - 1531) zelf wel wist dat het elke wetenschappelijke basis miste. De Bataafse Mythe wordt thans niet meer als waarheid beschouwd. Toch worden de componenten van die mythe, inclusief de Romeinen, Merovingers, Bonifatius, het aartsbisdom Utrecht en het verhaal over Karel de Grote in Nijmegen, nog steeds als vaststaand feit verkondigd,terwijl er voldoende redenis om daaraan te twijfelen.
