Principles and Methods of Pursuit by Direct Pressure as Illustrated by the Second Division (U.S.) in the Third Phase of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive

This paper is a brief study of the plan of the American First Army, and of the terrain in order to show how the 2nd Division dovetailed into the general scheme. The study is approached with the following objects in view: determine the outstanding lessons that are illustrated in the pursuit phase of the operation; and, to see whether these outstanding lessons confirm or disprove the principles described in Field Service Regulations, United States Army, 1923, and in the Command and General Staff School texts on \“Tactical Principles and Decisions,\” and \“Tactical and Strategical Studies.\”
