The Air and Space Expeditionary Force (AEF) is the construct that the AF uses to present forces to the Combatant Commanders. It was initiated in 1999 to provide increased stability and predictability to the force as we supported the steady-state contingencies of Operation Northern and Southern Watch. The AEF concept of the late 1990s included five pairs of AEFs each with a 90-day window of vulnerability for deployment within a 15-month training, deployment and reconstitution cycle.
