Die Wahlverwandtschaften (Elective Affinities), by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, is a novella, first published in 1809. It is Goethe's fourth novel.
The novel intertwines the story of four characters, Eduard and Ottilie and their friends, Charlotte and the Captain. Set on Eduard's rural estate, the relationships of these characters are tested when they invite new figures into their secluded lives. The title, taken from a scientific concept, is used as a metaphor for the human relationships and passions, exploring themes of marriage, love, duty, and free will.
