A successful businessman buys his dream house, only to find that the third floor is haunted by the ghost of a butler who worked there in the nineteenth century. From the time he meets the ghost, his life begins to unravel: a newly hired employee tempts him, his marriage falters, his children stumble through school, and his prized automobile is wrecked. He accuses the ghost of interfering in his life, but it is not that simple. A final tragedy wrecks him completely, and forces him to confront both the ghost and his own failings.
