E the lively widow and her two companions were approaching Llanwyllen Hall, the baronet and his laughing neighbour were continuing their walk in the beautiful and extensive gardens. Mr. Heartfree had been admiring the various improvements made by Sir Owen at a great expense; and was observing, that the splendid place wanted nothing but -a handsome young mistress, to make the residence every thing that a man of his friend’s
taste and gallantry could desire. – Sir Owen had thrown out several hints of this intended addition; with a very amusing expression in his face, of self-satisfaction at the thought. – Heartfree, as was his custom, while he enjoyedhis own joke, wished to make his companion happy, and laughing, as himself; – and he tried to do so, according to his maxim, by humouring him in his own way. – In this he had completely succeeded. But – to the surprise of the baronet – suddenly the laughter of Heartfree ceased; and to a joking remark of Sir Owen no reply was returned. – Even Heartfree became silent for a while – serious, and pensive. It should be remarked, that about two years before, when Sir Owen came to reside at Llan- wyllen Hall, a neat cottage near his gate was, by his order, prepared for the habitation of
a respectable female, who wished to live in retirement. This person, having taken up her abode in the cottage, was for some time an object of curiosity to those who lived in the neighbourhood…
