The play tells the story of a woman named Matilda who marries a wealthy man named Lord Davenant, becoming the stepmother to his two children, Bertrand and Eudora. Matilda is initially kind and loving towards the children, but her true nature is revealed when Lord Davenant dies and she is left in charge of his estate. Matilda becomes jealous of Bertrand and Eudora, believing they stand in the way of her own son's inheritance. She begins to mistreat and abuse them, leading to a tragic ending for all involved.
